I found that if I have started the game up once using the batch file and made sure that the resolution is set correctly in-game I can start it after without the batch file and it is fine. You can't use the batch file to start the game if you are using gameranger but, apart from suspending explorer which other mods can do for you, the only thing the batch file does is tell the game to start in the correct resolution. If you need to do this you can make a backup copy of your original file and just rename the patched file to age2_x_1.exe and copy it into place. If you want to play on GameRanger you have to have the game started from an originally named age2_x_1.exe in it's proper location. To run the game just execute the batch file. These are new files and your originals won't be modified. For example, for a 1900x1200 resolution it will create age2_x1_1.0c_1920x1200.exe and AoC1.0c 1920x1200.bat in your main AOEII directory.
